We work with people with HIV and AIDS

Markson Sichale, Malawi"I was ill for some time and was unable to work. I went to traditional doctors who said I was bewitched." Markson Sichale, Malawi.

HIV and AIDS and poverty

HIV and AIDS is having a huge impact on poverty.

  • When people fall sick they have less time to work on their land, as do the people who care for them.

  • Children's education is suffering as parents and teachers die.

  • Funeral expenses place a real strain on family income.

  • Women bear the heaviest burden as they tend to be the ones who care for sick relatives.

Poverty and HIV and AIDS

And poverty means that HIV and AIDS has a worse impact on communities that it would otherwise do.

  • People are more likely to fall sick when they are not well nourished and find it hard to access to antiretroviral drugs.

  • HIV and AIDS is more likely to spread if people don't have information about the disease.

  • Men who have migrated to find work often return to their communities infected with HIV and AIDS.

What we are doing

We are doing our bit to help communities stop this vicious cycle. We are supporting people to improve their nutrition and are helping to reduce the amount of time families have to spend on caring for their sick by setting up AIDs committees and training home-based care attendants. Read more.
