Accessing services

Phul Kumar, India

"As a group, we decided we should try to improve the poor education facilities available.  The primary school teacher was so unreliable; he frequently wouldn't turn up or he would be intoxicated.

We decided to complain to the block-level education officer.

They conducted an investigation and the teacher has now been removed and replaced with a good, reliable teacher, so our children will now be taught well."

Phul Kumar, India

Clean water, a decent education and effective healthcare. Not much to ask is it? But for many families living in remote and poor areas this is little more than an ideal.

These are services that everyone is entitled to, and we are supporting people to make sure they get them.

We encourage people to come together in community groups where they can discuss problems, learn about their rights and come up with solutions so that they can access government services that benefit the whole village.

With our support the people we work with gain access to:

  • HIV and AIDS prevention, testing, counselling and care

  • Healthcare

  • Education

  • Safe drinking water and basic sanitation
